Happy Fathers’ Day!

Steamboat Surgery Center wishes you and your loved ones a Happy Fathers’ Day!  In honor of fathers and male role models everywhere, encourage the men in your lives to pay more attention to their health.  Compared to women, men are more likely to participate in unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, drinking, and putting off regular checkups and needed medical care.  Fathers’ Day serves as a reminder to us all not only to appreciate the men in our lives, but also to encourage them to stay healthy and live long.  Click here to get started!

Steamboat Surgery Center Welcomes Dr. Beckley and Dr. Halbrecht!

Steamboat Surgery Center is excited to announce the newest additions to our medical staff: Akin Beckley, MD, PhD, FACS of Alpine Surgical and Joanne Halbrecht, MD of Boulder Institute for Sports Medicine. 

Dr. Beckley is a board-certified general surgeon with a PhD in Biomedical Science.  He has extensive training in all aspects of General Surgery and specializes in minimally-invasive approaches.  Dr. Beckley is a member of the American Hernia Society, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the National Board of Medical Examiners.  Learn more about Dr. Beckley here!

Dr. Halbrecht is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with training in sports medicine.  She is an expert in arthroscopic surgeries.  Dr. Halbrecht also offers stem cell therapy with tendon repair.  In scientific study, stem cell therapy has shown impressive results in aiding recovery for surgically repaired tendons.  Steamboat Surgery Center is excited to offer this new procedure through Dr. Halbrecht.  Learn more about Dr. Halbrecht here!

Come Join Dr. Richard Stewart for a Free Health Lecture on Advanced Treatment for Cataracts on Tuesday, June 7

Steamboat Surgery Center invites you and your family to join us for a patient education talk with Richard Stewart, MD, MSPH of Specialty Eye Care.  The free health lecture is titled “Advanced Treatment for Cataracts”.  Dr. Richard Stewart, a board-certified ophthalmologist, will discuss laser cataract surgery with modern lens implants, a procedure that can improve vision for those with cataracts and reduce the need for glasses.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, June 7, from 11a.m. to noon at Calvary Bible Church, 3245 Kalmia Avenue, Boulder, CO 80301.  Make sure you visit bchlectures.org/cataracts to register.  Registration is required!

Happy Mother’s Day and Happy National Women’s Health Week from Steamboat Surgery Center

Steamboat Surgery Center wishes you a Happy Mother’s Day and a Happy National Women’s Health Week.  This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 8, which also marks the beginning of National Women’s Health Week.  This is a time for women to make their health a priority, and for men to support the women in their lives reach their health goals.  Together we can all take steps to improve our health.  Visit the official website for National Women’s Health Week to obtain health improvement resources tailored to women.  We encourage all women to ‘Take the Pledge’ to better health while visiting the site  and schedule a check-up with your primary care provider in honor of National Women’s Check-up Day on Monday, May 9.

Come Join Dr. Kara Beasley for a Free Health Lecture on Involuntary Tremors on Thursday, May 12

Steamboat Surgery Center invites you and your family to join us for a patient education talk with Kara Beasley, DO, of Boulder Neurosurgical and Spine Associates, and Alan Zacharias, MD, of Associated Neurologists.  The free health lecture, “Controlling Involuntary ‘Tremors’,” will focus on the newest approaches in diagnosing and treating tremors due to Parkinson’s and Essential Tremor.  Come hear about the new medications and therapies combating tremors, as well as deep brain stimulation (DBS), a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that can calm tremors and help with the stiffness and slowness of Parkinson’s disease. 

Dr. Beasley is one of very few dually credentialed neurosurgeons and bioethicists in the world.  Her areas of interest include tumor, deep brain stimulation for movement disorders, neuromodulation for refractory chronic pain, and the surgical treatment of epilepsy.  She is currently able to perform Stage 2 DBS surgery in the outpatient setting at Steamboat Surgery Center.

Come Join Us for a Patient Education Talk with Dr. Owen Ellis

Steamboat Surgery Center invites you and your family to join us for a patient education talk with Dr. Owen Ellis, anesthesiologist.  The free health lecture, “Anesthesia: What to Expect Before, During & After Surgery,” will take place on Wednesday, April 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Steamboat Hospital, 474 Arapahoe Ave, Boulder, CO, Leo Hill Conference Room.  

Anesthesia can be one of the most anxiety provoking aspects of surgery.  Address your anesthesia apprehension by learning the basics from Dr. Ellis, one of Steamboat Surgery Center’s highly qualified anesthesiologists.  Dr. Ellis has more than 15 years of experience as an anesthesiologist and is prepared to respond to your questions.

April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month

Did you know two-thirds of blindness and vision impairment occurs in women?  It’s estimated that more than 75% of visual impairment can be prevented or corrected through surgery.  The risk factors for blindness and vision impairment include smoking, excess weight, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and exposure to UV rays.  Are you doing all that you can to protect the health of your eyes and those of your loved ones?  If not, consider reading more about eye health care from Women’s Eye Health.org.  And make sure to visit your eye doctor if you think your vision could be worsening!
