As an ambulatory surgery center (ASC), this center provides patients the convenience of outpatient surgical care performed safely outside of the hospital setting. While ASCs do not replace the need for complex inpatient surgery and long-term hospital stays, they do offer a quality, cost-effective outpatient option for many surgical cases. In most cases, the quality of service, patient outcomes, and cost of service are all more favorable at ambulatory surgery centers when compared with hospital outpatient surgery departments. 1 With health care costs rising at dramatic rates, ASCs stand out as one area of medicine where rates are decreasing for patients and employers.2
ASCs are unique in that they treat otherwise healthy patients that happen to need surgery. When patients opt to have procedures at an ASC instead of a hospital, they avoid interaction with sick patients thereby reducing the risk of a hospital-acquired infection. 3 That’s why Steamboat Surgery Center plans to begin offering this low-cost, high-quality alternative service in 2020.
